Founded by Busabong “Pui” Kuetkong, the sanctuary was created from a deep love for Thailand’s gentle giants and a mission to ensure that rescued elephants can live free from pain, exploitation, and fear.
Our Story and Purpose
After witnessing the suffering of elephants used for logging and tourism in Chiang Mai, Pui made a promise to create a place where elephants could heal, rediscover their natural instincts, and live in peace.
What began as a small rescue effort has grown into a true refuge and today, Maerim Elephant Sanctuary stands as a model of ethical elephant care in Thailand, inspiring thousands of visitors from around the world to learn, love, and respect these magnificent animals.

Supporting Local Communities

We buy food for our elephants directly from nearby villages, supporting local farmers who grow bananas, sugarcane, grasses, mangoes, and watermelons.
This helps create stable jobs and keeps the connection between community and conservation strong.

We are also committed to protecting the planet that elephants call home.
Maerim Elephant Sanctuary works continuously to reduce our carbon footprint by:
- Planting new trees every month
- Using recyclable glass bottles for drinking water
- Limiting plastic and waste on site
